Athens, Greece
Although the city of Athens is relatively small, the metropolitan area comprises 54 municipalities which multiply its population almost six fold. The area located north of the Saronic Gulf has probably been inhabited for over 10,000 years, since the Neolithic period. The city has been important since the Mycenaean period, around 1400 BC, although it enjoyed its period of greatest splendour during the Classical period, in the 5th century BC.
Athens is surrounded by the Parnitha, Pendeli and Hymettus mountains and the port of Piraeus in the eastern Mediterranean. The urbanised plain on which Athens sits is dotted with eight hills, among which Mount Lycabettus and the Acropolis are worth special mention.
